Summer Reading Challenge 2021/22

Shoot for the stars this summer!

1st December 2021 - 4th February 2022

Win out of this world prizes, earn stickers, complete challenges, read books, and learn about space!

There are four categories:

Preschool (0 – 4 years)

Primary (5 – 12 years)

Youth (12 – 18 years)

Adults (18+ years)

HOW IT WORKS

PRESCHOOL and PRIMARY CHALLENGES

  1. Pick up a challenge booklet at any Waimakariri Library from December 1st 2021.
  2. Complete 12 challenges to complete the Summer Reading Challenge.
  3. Complete all the challenges to go into another prize draw!
  4. Finish the challenge and bring in the booklet by 4th February 2022 go into a prize draw of out of this world prizes and be able to come to a stellar finale party.
  5. When you pick up a booklet for your child, don't forget to pick up a card so you can participate in the Summer Reading Challenge too. Participating in this challenge is great modelling for your child and will encourage them to complete the challenge.

YOUTH CHALLENGE

  1. Pick up a challenge booklet at any Waimakariri Library from December 1st 2021.
  2. Complete 10 challenges from the reading and activity options to complete the challenge and go in the draw to win prizes, including the super reader prize!
  3. Congratulations, you are now eligible to attend a Summer Reading Challenge Movie Party!
  4. If you want to complete all the challenges and go into another prize draw you can do so.
  5. Finish the challenge and bring in the booklet by 4th February 2022.

EXTRA CHALLENGE

The primary and teen challenges have an extra challenge for those who just want to read, read, read!

On Beanstack there is a reading log challenge where you can read and log your books and go into another prize draw.

You can enter either one of these draws, or both - it's up to you!

ADULT CHALLENGE

  1. Pick up a challenge card at any Waimakariri Library from December 1st 2021.
  2. Complete 10 challenges to complete the Summer Reading Challenge and go into a stellar prize draw!
  3. If you want to complete all the challenges and go into another prize draw you can do so.
  4. Finish the challenge and bring in the card by 4th February 2022.

You can complete the adult Summer Reading Challenge on Beanstack instead if you like!

Unless otherwise specified, you can read physical books, eBooks or eAudiobooks.

Listen to eAudiobooks for all ages on Borrowbox.

Storybox Library allows storytime to be anytime! Watch and listen to some of your favourite stories being read by Australian and New Zealand storytellers! Reading aloud to children, in particular by diverse and engaging storytellers, greatly improves language and literacy skills, especially in the early years of a child’s development.

eMagazines and eComics

Libby provides access to popular magazines and now also has a great range of eComics which are yours to download and keep. Libby also provides access to more eBooks and eAudiobooks.

Watch Movies and Episodes

Kanopy has over 10,000 titles and with new content added monthly there is something here for everyone! Kanopy Kids provides specific content for children with unlimited access to a diverse selection of educational and entertaining content - from movies, TV series, animated storybooks, to live action, and animated favourites!

eResources

New Zealand Geographic has awesome articles, documentaries and information about the people, places and wildlife of New Zealand and surrounding areas, like Antarctica.

Kids eLibrary is a great place to start looking for ideas to complete challenges, particularly for the Primary age group.

Kids Reading has some excellent recommendations for a variety of genres and reading levels.

Tumblebooks has hundreds of animated picture books to listen to or read. Along with read-along chapter books, non-fiction books, and exciting games and puzzles!

Recipes

Mars is a red planet, make a red smoothie and complete a challenge using the recipe here.
