Waimakariri Libraries have created a virtual celebration this year to celebrate Te Wiki o Te Reo Māori. Library, and Council staff have worked together behind the scenes to create something special for the library website, and social media.
Local schools who would normally perform in the library have filmed their kapa haka groups, and have shared these with the library to be featured on our social media, with a different school being featured each day during the week.
The Waimakariri District Council Waiata Group have filmed their performance, and some members have recorded their personal mihi to share, with help from Rachel Thornton from the Waimakariri District Council Community Team.
Storytimes, and Toddler Times sessions during the week will feature picture book readings in Te Reo Māori, and staff will sing waiata especially for pre-schoolers. There will also be book displays.
Library staff at all three libraries will also participate in The Māori Language Moment at 12pm on Monday 14 September.
