Entertain your kids over the winter school holidays with KidsFest. With hundreds of cool events and activities, there is plenty of fun stuff to keep the kids amused.
KidsFest is an annual two-week festival designed especially for children age 0-13 and has entertained thousands of children and families over the past 26 years. Running since 1992, with events in Christchurch, Banks Peninsula, Waimakariri and Selwyn Districts, KidsFest is excited to be back in 2019!
The Waimakariri Libraries are hosting events in Oxford, Rangiora, and Kaiapoi. KidsFest Booklets are available in all three libraries. The libraries are bringing back some of their popular events such as the perennial favourite: Mystery Trails, where kids can come along to the libraries and use clues to find the hidden robots in the shelves; and the famous Family Quiz Nights are also returning – perhaps your family can take out the number one spot this year?
New activities this year include daytime, and evening activities to give kids the chance to get creative in the school holidays. Children and their families will have an opportunity to create their own robots to be released into cyberspace via the library website, and take their creations home with them. Aspiring train drivers will have the opportunity to join the North Canterbury Model Railway Club to operate and drive Thomas and some of his Friends around the large model railway.
Young Writers will have four opportunities to work with real writers as tutors, to engage and excite young people in the writing process. The School for Young Writers has been inspiring young writers for 25 years, and their tutors are all practising writers and skilled teachers. These Workshops are designed for Year 5-8 young writers, and there will also be a special event to launch Write On 52, celebrating the success of local young writers from Waimakariri.
The majority of the libraries KidsFest events are free, except for one key event with award winning Magician ELGREGOE who will present his show called AMAZE! Come to the most amazing and magical show for children of all ages. Meet Elgregoe's exotic parrots and learn a couple of simple tricks. Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II appointed Elgregoe a Member of the New Zealand Order of Merit for services to education. Other recent awards include The Variety Artists Club of New Zealand Top Children's Entertainer Award and The Grand Master of Magic award.
Families can register for these events at any Waimakariri Library. For more information check out the KidsFest booklet, available in all three libraries, or go to: http://www.kidsfest.co.nz/
