Update on Kaiapoi Library and Library Services
The 7.1 magnitude earthquake of Saturday 4 September caused significant damage to our Kaiapoi library. At this time, it is closed until further notice.
We really appreciate everyone’s patience and understanding while we adapt to these new circumstances.
We hope to be able to update you regularly as we gain a clearer idea about the future of library services in Kaiapoi.
Remember, your Waimakariri District Libraries card works in all of our libraries. You can borrow and return materials at Rangiora or Oxford Libraries and return items to Kaiapoi library.
What’s happened to all Kaiapoi’s books?
The really good news is that our team was able to rescue all of the stock, shelving, the budgie and the goldfish in the first days following the quake. Some of the newer items have been relocated to Rangiora library but the majority of the materials have been placed into secure storage (the animals are being cared for).
Where can I return my Kaiapoi library items?
Please return these to either Oxford or Rangiora libraries. The after-hours drop box at Kaiapoi library, which is located in the conservatory on Raven Quay is also available and is being cleared once per day. The Woodend drop box, located outside Scotties Fish & Chip shop in Woodend (State Highway 1) is also being cleared daily.
What if I’ve had to move?
That’s OK. Your Waimakariri District Libraries card will still work even if you have temporarily had to move outside the District. Please do contact us with your up-to-date information so we can remain in touch.
What library services are available to me now?
Rangiora and Oxford libraries are open and continue to offer full library services and free internet. Library users are very welcome to come and visit us at either of these libraries.

Mobile Library
From Saturday 2 October, our colleagues from Christchurch City Libraries will be assisting us by bringing their Mobile Library service into Kaiapoi.
The book bus will come to Kaiapoi every Saturday and will be available at the Kaiapoi Aquatic Centre bus stop, Cass Street, Kaiapoi from 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m.
If you would like to make use of this service, please bring your Waimakariri District Libraries card and another form of I.D. to present to the mobile library staff. They will enrol you and you will then have access to the City Libraries network collection through this mobile service.
Mobile library bus materials may be returned directly to the bus or to Waimakariri District other libraries or drop boxes.
Please note that you will be responsible for all City items and charges borrowed through the mobile service on your card.
We would like to offer our sincere thanks to our friends and colleagues at Christchurch City Libraries and acknowledge their generous help at this time.

Will you extend your opening hours?
Rangiora library will now be open on Thursday until 7:00 p.m. in addition to its regular late night of Friday until 7:00 p.m.
Are your online services working?
Our web pages, online resources and library catalogue are also all fully operational. If you have access to the internet you can check your record, renew and reserve items yourself online using your library barcode and PIN number.
How can I get a PIN?
Please contact us and we will be happy to set this up for you.
What if I cannot get to Rangiora or Oxford libraries?
Our Housebound service has been expanded to cover all people resident in Kaiapoi or Kairaki who have mobility or transport issues preventing them from accessing Rangiora or Oxford libraries easily. Please ask staff for details and delivery options – we’ll bring the library to you!
How do I know which items are in storage?
Our online library catalogue shows all the items in our entire collection. Any items in storage will show a status of “Closed Storage”. Alternatively, please ask one of our staff or telephone us to find out if we have access to a particular item.
Can I get access to books in storage?
Regrettably, items in storage are unavailable until further notice.
Can I place holds on items that are in store?
No – the online catalogue will not let you (or staff) place holds on items in storage. They are unavailable until further notice.
Waimakariri District Libraries offers access to the National Interloan Service (where we borrow from other libraries on your behalf). There is a minimum charge for items of $5.00 per item requested.
What about late returns and fines?
All fines were suspended in the immediate aftermath of the quake. All items on loan were automatically extended. If you have any concerns about the items you had on loan, please do contact us.
Fines will recommence on 1 October 2010. If you have material you are unable to return due to quake damage / access issues to your house, please do contact staff who will be happy to help.
What about library items damaged in the earthquake?
If during the earthquake, library items on loan to you were destroyed or damaged, please do contact us for more information. We can issue you with an invoice for the items concerned that you can use with your insurance company. As we realise settlements could take some time, normal borrowing access will not be compromised by any charges invoiced due to damage.
What about Story Times and Baby Times?
These have had to be suspended at Kaiapoi. However, parents are most welcome to bring children to our other sessions being held at Rangiora and Oxford libraries.
