Local History of the Waimakariri District
The Waimakariri District was formed in 1989 as a result of the amalgamation of Oxford, the southern area of Hurunui County (including parts of the old Ashley and Kowai County), Kaiapoi Borough and the Rangiora District (including the old Eyre County).
The most authoritative printed history of the district and its former counties and borough is: Beyond the Waimakariri: A regional History by D.A. Hawkins. An online copy is available in our e-books and the book itself is available to be borrowed at the District Libraries.

Kete Waimakariri
Kete Waimakariri is a free web space where local groups or individuals can store images, records, and histories, and communities can share news and events. The aim of the Kete Project is to celebrate who we are and how we live and what we do, through photographs, video, audio footage and stories.
Landmarks Website
Landmarks was created to recognise buildings, sites and locations of historic significance in Rangiora, and includes Kaiapoi. It has been developed by the Waimakariri District Council, the Rangiora & Districts Early Records Society, and the Kaiapoi Districts Historical Society. The website includes information about historical sites, past and present images and a link to add your own stories.
